Nature Specimens

Fossil Shark Teeth
Real fossil shark teeth.  The ones we have imported from Florida are black in colour, those from Morocco are a light brown/cream colour.  We carry both colours,  If no colour choice is specified in your order, we will send a random colour or a variety.   These fossils are Miocene in age.  Larger teeth are impressive, but may not be complete with "root".  Smaller teeth have a nicer shape & are more likely to be complete.  Nearly all will show some natural rounding caused by erosion.   Why pay big bucks for these in Banff or at fancy stores?  Our prices are much more reasonable.  We also have a limited number of lower grade but very large fossil Megalodon shark teeth in our showroom, individually priced up to $35.00 each.
SHRK.06   Medium (12 to 30 mm) $0.50 each (specify colour choice)
SHRK.09  Various sizes (mostly slightly larger, more well-formed specimens) "choice" grade $2.00 each

Please see our Earth Science/Geology page for more Nature Specimens, including individual Rock and Mineral specimens.

AUGUST 2023 UPDATE: The North American barn owl population is at a 10-year low and natural owl pellet supplies are very limited.  This industry-wide shortage means that supplier prices have gone up considerably and the result is we will have to raise our prices accordingly.

Owl Pellet Kit

Owls eat mice and other small mammals (as well as small birds, insects and even fish), but their intestines are not able to handle the bones and other hard or indigestible parts of these animals.  So the owl regurgitates the fur, feathers and bones in an elongate pellet form, not unlike a cat’s hairball.  Each pellet has been sterilized and should contain bones from at least one small animal or bird.  Students pick apart the pellet, remove the bones, identify them and attempt a reconstruction of the skeleton.  This is an alternative to traditional "wet" dissection for those uncomfortable with it.  Kit contains 2 sterilized foil-wrapped owl pellets, tweezers, 2 craft stick "probes", petri dish with cover, magnifying glass and instructions/information sheet with bone charts.     Note: As with other natural specimens that require "opening" (such as geodes), there is no guarantee that each owl pellet will contain the expected material.   Nature does not provide guarantees, nor have we X-rayed the pellets to see if they contain complete skeletons!  These pellets were collected in the wilds of Washington & Oregon by various means and are bound to contain a variety of prey.  OWL.01  $14.95/kit

Owl Pellets, individual
See background information above.  Sterilized, foil wrapped.
They will last for several years if kept in a sealed container in a cool, dry place.  Owl Pellets are natural products, so sizes vary and are are approximate.  Note that the bones from the "mini" size (OWL.03b) are very tiny and require patience and manual dexterity for successful extraction from the pellet, so use by younger students is not recommended for that size.  See "Note" above.

OWL.03   large ("regular") size, 1.5 to 2 inch    $6.95 each

OWL.03a medium size, 1 to 1.5 inch                   $4.95 each

OWL.3b   small ("mini") size, 0.5 to 1 inch        $2.95 each

Fossil Shark Tooth Excavation Blocks
We know teachers want to have exciting, hands-on activities for their students, but don\\'t always have the time or resources to prepare materials that capture students\\' interest in science.  We hope these Fossil Blocks will provide a jump start for that interest.  Now you can give your students the thrill of "digging" their own fossil, just like a real palaeontologist!  These are blocks of "pseudo-rock" (sand/plaster mixture), with a real Miocene age fossil shark tooth embedded in the centre of the block.  Students "excavate" their fossil with a simple tool to remove the fossil completely, or once exposed, leave the shark tooth half embedded for a more authentic look.  Also available in sets of 12 for a quick ready-to-teach lesson for you or a substitute teacher.
FOSL.02 single block $2.00 each
FOSL.03
of 12 with Teacher\\'s Guide, scraping sticks $19.95/set
